Arizona DUI Arrests during Labor Day Weekend Decreased

Labor Day in the United States is often celebrated every first Monday of September. This year, Labor day fell on the 5th of September. Other than commemorating the economic and social contributions of workers, Labor Day also signifies the symbolic end of Summer and in U.S. sports, the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons.

The long weekend before Labor Day has always been a concern for Traffic authorities due to the increase of alcohol-impaired drivers during these days. Arizona was prepared for the celebration of Labor Day, however, and as drunk driving victim attorneys in Arizona, we are happy to report that DUI arrests during the holidays declined compared to 2010.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has reported 9 fatal crashes and 11 fatalities. Alcohol-related fatal crashes and alcohol-related deaths both have two reported incidents.

The Governor's Office has revealed that 617 were arrested by the statewide task force targeting impaired drivers during the Labor Day weekend as compared to the 949 DUI arrests last year. Extreme DUI arrests accounted for 192 arrests while 79 arrests have prior DUI arrests while 43 arrests were drivers under 21 years old.

However, Agency Director Alberto Gutier believes that the cause of fewer DUI arrests this year is due to a fewer number of officers involved in the task force.
